11 Classic Songs For Halloween

Christmas has its carols, but Halloween? Well, it’s a little tougher to find songs dedicated strictly to the holiday.

Sure, “Monster Mash” is a classic, but it’s also insanely overplayed. We’ve come up with ten spooky-ish songs that are classic yet not total novelty tracks. Try ’em out at your Halloween soiree this weekend.

Any Halloween favorites you would add? Sound off in the comments below.

1. “Thriller” – Michael Jackson

Because the King of Pop started the zombie craze.

2. “I Put A Spell on You” – Screamin’ Jay Hawkins

Because a lot of people have covered this song, but none quite like Screamin’ Jay.
3. “Ghostbusters” – Ray Parker, Jr.

Because he lets you know who to call if things get out of hand.

4. “Psycho Killer” – Talking Heads

Because not only does David Byrne’s oversized suit look like a costume, but psycho killers are 100 percent terrifying.

5. “Season of the Witch” – Donovan

Because Donovan simultaneously captures the feeling of the swinging ’60s and Halloween.

6. “Werewolves of London” – Warren Zevon

Because no Halloween party is complete without a little howling.

7. “I Want Candy” – Bow Wow Wow

Because there’s no joy quite like trick-or-treating as a kid.

8. “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” – Blue Oyster Cult

Because ever since the Scream franchise, the reaper has become one of the most common costumes.

9. “Witchy Woman” – Eagles

Because every Halloween party has at least a few witches in attendance.

10. “Superstition” – Stevie Wonder

Because it’s a holiday that practically endorses superstition and strange times.

Make that 11, we like things that go to 11. How can we not include The Sonics from Tacoma Washington and their 1964 classic The Witch, videotaped here at their Halloween of ’08 reunion show in Seattle’s Paramount with the E-Street Band’s Little Steven Van Zandt. I recently found out that original Sonics bass player Andy Parypa lives four houses away from me in West Seattle.
