Sarah’s Beer of the Week 08.16.13

On my latest trip to the Seattle Public Library I walked past Capitol Grille and thought ‘hey, what a great place for happy hour and a beer’.  What a great place to have my beer of the week.  Having never been inside I had no idea if it was a good spot, but it looked like it had great potential.  Doesn’t take much to convince me to sample a brew.

Capitol Grille in Downtown Seattle has a fine beer selection.  More impressive than I was expecting.  I was temped to order a Peroni, but spotted something unknown, and of course, had to check that out.  What I ordered was Mirror Pond Pale Ale, brewed by Deschutes in Oregon.  This beer has apparently won numerous awards, including Best Beer in America by Men’s Journal.  It’s copper colored, pours nice, malty and has a hint of citrus.  It didn’t have the musky dirt taste that some overly malty beers can have.  Nothing ‘overly’ about this beer at all.  Nothing is over done, it is a fine balance of ingredients and yumminess.  I don’t think that’s a word, but when it comes to beer drinking…well, we make up our own words sometimes, don’t we.  It clocks in at 5%, which is almost perfection.  5-6% is perfect for me, so I can have more than one.  Which was the case on this outing.  Also, Capitol Grille has a great happy hour menu.  I was shocked how good/big the lobster roll was, all for $6.  I’ll keep my eye out for more from Deschutes, as the Pale Ale is thoroughly drinkable.
