Regarding a show in Astbury Park weeks earlier, it read, “Rock and Roll music encouraged juvenile delinquency, and inspired young females in lewd bathing suits to perform obscene dances on the city’s beaches“. This was later incorporated into the KZOK Mission Statement.
Dick Clark, promoting a tour featuring The Monkees with opening act The Jimi Hendrix Experience, realizes that “one of these things is not like the other”, and makes up a story about how the conservative “Daughters of the American Revolution” group had complained that the Experience were frightening their teenybopper children, and will leave the tour after only 6 shows. Jimi played his last with The Monkees tonight in 1967 in Miami.
The Beatles were at Abbey Road studios today in 1969, working on Abbey Road for the first time with John since his car crash in Scotland. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young started their 1974 Bill Graham produced tour tonight in 1974 in front of 15,000 at the Seattle Center Coliseum. Steven Stills had supplemented his usual wardrobe of a football jersey with army fatigues, telling people he was a deep-cover CIA agent. Neil Young resented that most of the 3 hour set was his songs, and distanced himself from the rest securing his own RV for the tour.
Cheap Trick had their only #1 hit today in 1988, (a year when bands had to have a “power ballad” to get on American rock radio) with the least-loved song of their current set list, The Flame.
The Grateful Dead played their last show with Jerry Garcia tonight in 1995 at Chicago’s Soldier Field. He would die of a heart attack in rehab a month later.
It was today in 2010 that Carlos Santana, so taken by the solo his drummer Cindy Blackman had just performed in Tinly Park, IL, proposed to her on stage. They were married in December.

Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell almost made it to retirement, he would have been 65 today. He was planning to return to England that day, but died of “natural causes” in his hotel room in Portland on the “Experience Hendrix” tour in 2008 and was buried here in Seattle.
The Widow Cobain Courtney Love is 48 today and now lives in Los Angeles, and Seattle is all too happy to let them have her.
