It was tonight in 1966 that The Yardbirds were at the Marquee Club in London with a new bass player: Jimmy Page. Original bassist Paul Samwell-Smith had quit to become a record producer, and Page agreed to play bass until rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja learned the parts, at which point the Yardbirds had both Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck playing guitar leads. Beck would be booted out of the band by October for being a less-than punctual grumpy perfectionist.
Meanwhile across London at Abbey Road Studios, 3 of The Beatles were in a marathon 9 hour session spent on one song, Lennon’s She Said, She Said. Paul McCartney did not play on it. The lyrics had come from a party at a Beverly Hills house that George Epstein had rented for a break in their tour. While they were all on acid, actor Peter Fonda had started talking about the time he had accidentally alm0st killed himself while playing with a gun as a child: “I know what it’s like to be dead, man”, to which Lennon responded, “Listen mate, shut up about that stuff! You’re making me feel like I’ve never been born!” George Harrison later commented, “…This guy who I really didn’t know…he hadn’t made Easy Rider yet or anything…kept coming over, wearing shades, saying ‘I know what it’s like to be dead’, and we kept leaving him because he was sooo boring…showing us his bullet wound…. He was so uncool.”
Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore quit the band today in 1975, in order to start a new band to be called Rainbow. They would release 10 studio albums, with none of them having the same line up of musicians.
