It was today in 1969 that Led Zeppelin became the first major British Rock band to play in Hawaii….the Hawaiians thought it was DaKine, Bra.  In any case Zeppelin were just trying to get as far away from Seattle as quickly as possible, because just two days before they had completely destroyed the Green Lake Aqua Theatre….though no one else knew it yet….it wouldn’t be for another month that city engineers inspected the old Aqua theatre and found that the Zeppelin show had rendered it structurally unsound and ordered it torn down …..but they would allow ONE more rock show that summer before the wrecking ball moved it….but it was only the Grateful Dead.

It was today in 1970 that The Beatles film “Let It Be” premiered in New York…it was originally planned as a TV documentary….featuring the famous unannounced rooftop concert…they did Let It Be too, ‘cause after that they went their separate ways.

Today in 1971 Grace Slick of the Jefferson Airplane crashed her Mercedes into a wall near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, becoming that city’s Dale Ellis….she was taken to the hospital, but not charged with DUI.

It was today in 1985 that Bruce Springsteen was down south of Portland, getting married to model Julianne Phillips of Lake Oswego….they’d be divorced by 1989.

Rock and Roll Birthdays

Ritchie Valenz would be 71 today if he hadn’t been on that place in 1959 with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper the Day the Music Died.

Richard Salwitz is 67 today….he’s the harmonica player for the J Geils Band with the coolest stage name ever….Magic Dick….Magic Dick also plays Trumpet and Saxophone

Pete Overend Watts is 64…he was the bass player for Mott The Hoople, and on to be a big shot record producer, doing albums for Lenny Kravitz…XTC and the Cult to name a few….the band always used to joke about how his middle name came from a time he tripped over his amp and fell Arse Over End…but that’s actually his real middle name.

And Little Stevie Wonder is a not so little 62 today….it seems like he’d be older than that, but he’s been making records since he was signed to his first Motown contract…at age 11.
