Within days of Bloody Sunday, Paul McCartney wrote “Give Ireland Back to the Irish,” which would become a significant hit in the UK despite being banned by the BBC.

McCartney’s old mate John Lennon wrote “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” As their history would indicate, Lennon’s take on the event was more strident and direct than McCartney’s.

Lennon had become active in Irish politics even before Bloody Sunday, and just a week after the shootings, he publicly indicated his support for the Irish marchers during a rally in New York City. He also sang a second song inspired by the events of a week before, “Luck of the Irish.” Here’s a live TV performance.

In 1983, U2 would record the most famous of the songs inspired by Bloody Sunday. Their “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is different from Lennon’s. Here’s a live performance from Rattle and Hum, recorded on the day of another famous event in the history of the Troubles, the Enniskillen bombing of 1987, with a modified lyric mentioning that event.

It was today in 1969, The Beatles played together as a live band for the very last time…a lunchtime rooftop gig on top of the Apple building on Savile Row in London. It lasted for a little over 40 minutes, until it was shut down by London Bobbies. It was all filmed, of course, and most of it ended up in the movie “Let It Be”….which has been out of print and very hard to get since the 80′s, but is scheduled to be re-released on DVD and BlueRay in 2013…..or… you could just watch it on YouTube.

It was today in 1972, Paul McCartney took a cue from what Neil Young did two years earlier after the Kent State University shootings, and wrote and recorded a proper protest song: ‘Give Ireland Back To The Irish’ was done within 24 hours of Bloody Sunday, when 13 Catholics were killed by British paratroopers. But unlike Neil Young’s “Ohio” which went to #17 on the Billboard charts here in America, Paul’s song was completely banned by the BBC…..though it did go to number one in Ireland….AND Spain….and got Wing’s Northern Irish guitarist Henry McCullogh’s brother beaten up.

And it was tonight in 1973, After changing their name from Wicked Lester, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss played their first show as Kiss at the Popcorn Club in Queens, New York.

Marty Balin is 70….the founder of a little band from San Francisco called…..The Jefferson Airplane.

Phil Collins is 61 today…a very good drummer who started out as a child actor.  He scored his first major role as the Artful Dodger in the London production of Oliver, he was an extra in the Beatles A Hard Day’s Night, and ended up on the editing room floor of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang…ended up as the drummer and backup vocalist in Genesis.  When Peter Gabriel stomped off after The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Phil sang backing vocals for some 400 singers who auditioned before Genesis decided….eh….Phil sounds more like us than any of these wankers, and they became more popular than ever.

Steve Marriott, singer, guitarist, and uber-mod with The Small Faces and later Humble Pie would be 65 today if he hadn’t caught his house on fire smoking in bed back in 1991.

Tricia Steel of the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation says the Van Halen lead-guitarist came with the brand-new guitars this week, saying he wanted them used in schools and not sold.

“Music is the universal language,” said Van Halen, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “It has the ability to transcend and convey every human emotion that exists without saying a word. Music kept me off the streets and out of trouble and gave me something that was mine that no one could take away from me.”

The non-profit Los Angeles foundation has distributed the guitars to seven schools serving mostly low-income students that needed them to replace broken instruments or build music enrollment.

Schools were not told where the guitars came from until they arrived, and then they were advised to keep them under tight lock and key.

Instead, the iconic guitarist has written two new songs since being diagnosed with lymphoma at Christmas, and is continuing work on the band’s first original-lineup album since 1978.

Iommi, Butler, frontman Ozzy Osbourne and drummer Bill Ward decided to move their recording operation from the US to the UK to make the guitarist’s health battle easier. He’s now receiving treatment for the form of cancer which attacks the immune system, and early indications suggest he’s responding well.

Butler says: “We got the engines back up and running at Tony’s home studio. Far from being down and depressed about his diagnosis, Tony had already written the music for two new songs.

“I must say it’s given us all a kick up the rump – it’s great to hear him churning out those riffs again, assuaging the ‘demon C’.

“Takes more than that to stop Tony. Can’t wait for you all to hear our workings – it has been great working on this stuff.”

Butler says goodwill messages from across the world have encouraged them all: “It really does help, not only Tony, but us as a band. It raises up our spirits and restores our faith in this tarnished world.

“Sabb fans are good people. Time and again you have proven your faith in us and boosted our endeavour.”

The band still plan to release the untitled album, produced by Rick Rubin, later this year. Despite Iommi’s illness the UK’s Download festival yesterday said they’ll appear as planned at the June event. They earlier cancelled a planned headline slot at Coachella in California in April.

Deen was arrested Saturday … after a heated argument with his lady turned physical.
According to law enforcement, Deen was booked into Polk County Jail on a laundry list of charges — including coercion, assault in the 4th degree, criminal mischief  in the 2nd degree, interfering with making a report, and harassment.

Additional charges stem from an altercation that occurred after the alleged physical blowout — when his girlfriend ran out of the house to call her father, and Deen grabbed the phone out of her hand and refused to let her contact her dad.

Deen’s bail was set at $52,500.00 — which he posted before being released.

A rep for Deen tells us, the rocker believes “it was a misunderstanding that should not have been escalated to such a level in the first place.”\

J Geils keyboard player Seth Justman is 61 and still wishing he had a name as cool as their harmonica player…Magic Dick.

Brian Downy is also 61….met a guy named Phil Lynott in high school in Dublin…started a band called…..Thin Lizzy.

And the only guy who’s played on every Pink Floyd album, drummer Nick Mason is 68….these days Nick likes holding hands, long walks on the beach, flying his Aerospatiale Helicopter around, and collecting and racing….. Ferrari.

Danny thinks people are trying to drive him crazy, because the seat of his car is always in a different position, and one time, his entire car was in the wrong place. Saner voices, the ones outside his head, try to remind Danny that he has a wife who also uses the car.

Trying a new beer each week is fun, and even more fun when I do it with friends.  Beers were enjoyed at The Black Bottle in Belltown with my friend Brittany.  I figured it was time I tried Manny’s which is a beer that seems to be EVERYWHERE.  We went out for happy hour, and despite imbibing managed to be well behaved.

I think I’ve seen Manny’s in more than 72% of the bars and restaurants I’ve been to in the Seattle area.  Manny’s is brewed by Georgetown Brewing Company here in Seattle.  It didn’t take me long to figure out why this beer is everywhere.  YUM!  And at 5.2% that means I can drink quite a few without falling over.  It pours a hazy yellow, and doesn’t overpower the nose.  Great balance of hops and malt.  Smooth, crisp, delicious.  I’m happy that finding this beer won’t be difficult.  Regarding the Black Bottle…amazing fried olives and ‘broccoli blasted’.  Not sure exactly what that means but it sure tasted good.

It was today in 1984, Yoko Ono donated almost a half-million dollars to a Liverpool Salvation Army orphanage called….Strawberry Field…..John added the plural for the song, but he used to love to go to their garden party every summer when he was a wee lad….sadly Strawberry Field was not forever, it closed in 2005, only to reopen as a church and prayer centre.

Set the wayback machine for 2004, Mr. Peabody….the last time Bob Dylan had pissed his fans off this much was back in 1965 when he pulled out a Fender Stratocaster instead of the Martin Acoustic that now sits in a glass case at the EMP…what did he do this time?  He flew to Venice Italy to film a TV ad…for Victoria’s Secret……with a Victoria’s secret model….you know not ALL Dylan fans think that’s so wrong…in fact I’d be willing, if the job required it.

The topic of Twinkies and concerns that they might disappear now that Hostess has filed for bankruptcy has us wondering: what snack can you not live without?

The New Riders originally featured Dead members Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart. The group was intended as an outlet for the trio’s interest in country rock. The other members in the band’s original lineup, David Nelson and John Dawson, were old San Francisco friends of the Dead.

Dawson and Nelson would remain constants in the band for years to come; the lineup around them would shift quite a bit, although drummer Spencer Dryden, formerly of the Jefferson Airplane, was a member for 10 years.

The New Riders’ first album was released in 1971. The band frequently opened for the Dead, and in December 1971, played a live radio concert with the Dead broadcast over WNEW-FM. But it is the New Riders’ third album for which they are best known. Although their second album, Powerglide, charted higher, The Adventures of Panama Red was their best seller — and if you know a single New Riders song, it’s probably “Panama Red.”

We heard “Glendale Train” from the band’s debut album on the radio the other day — the only NRPS album to feature Jerry Garcia in a starring role — and we like it.

Neil also revealed he has been writing songs recently and is happy with his results. He noted a 4th film with Demme would make the effort a “4 wheel drive not a 3 wheel drive.” Even after rumors of a tour earlier this year, there was “no mention of Buffalo Springfield.” The new Neil Young and Crazy Horse album will be the first since 2003′s Greendale. Crazy Horse and Young have always had a pretty open band relationship. Young moved from Crazy Horse to Crosby, Still, Nash & Young, to solo and back again and Young’s Crazy Horse albums have come at random over the last 43 years.

Who knows, if the fates all come together we could even see a tour from Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour this year too. Meanwhile enjoy these classic cuts from Neil Young:

The folks at SPIN kindly summed up the video for those of us with shorter attention spans saying “Roth, in his now-patented overalls, talks about the Elvis tattoo his uncle had that inspired the single’s opening lines, plus the evolution of Crayola crayons (‘Explodo Red, great name for a color. I’m not even sure what color that actually is, I just know it’s a great name’) and how much the ink needle hurts.” Roth says getting inked “is a rite of passage, because it really forces you to consider what’s permanent to you. What is it you really want to remember.”

It was on this day in 1958 that a band called “The Quarry Men” played at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England for the first and only time.  They would make the club famous world wide some years later under their new name…”The Beatles”.

It was on this day… 4 years later… The Beatles signed a management deal with a Liverpool record store owner who’d taken to fancying them….They gave Brian Epstein 25 percent of their gross earnings ….the normal management deal is 10%.

It was today in 1969 that New Jersey’s Attorney General’s office issued a warning to all American record dealers that they would be charged with distributing pornography if they were caught selling the John Lennon / Yoko Ono “Two Virgins” album, which featured John and Yoko buck-ass naked…from the front on the front, from the back on the back.  Thankfully when that album cover was parodied for the “5 Virgins” album by Seattle Band The Squirrels in 1986, they only did the back.

Warren Zevon… died at 56 of lung cancer …he should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…but never wrote as good a rock and roll song as Dancing Queen or Fernando.

John Belushi…comedic actor of SNL and Animal House fame, who started out with National Lampoon’s off-Broadway Woodstock parody “Lemmings”, and later the National Lampoon Radio Hour which at one time aired here on KZOK….Belushi was a pretty good drummer and a big music fan who as Blues Brother Jake E. Blues made a bunch of veteran studio musicians some serious coin…finally.

A guy still with us is 71 today, a guy who once had a song about a blow-up doll go to number 3 on the Top 40 Charts….Neil Diamond never really rocked that hard, but you put one of his songs in the hands of a Deep Purple?  Watch out!

In 1969, Havens was the first act to go on at the Woodstock Festival. He had planned to play four songs, but he ended up playing for over two hours. His performance of “Freedom” is justifiably famous, and the antiwar song “Handsome Johnny,” which appeared on his first album in 1967, is also terrific. But here he is doing “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

Havens’ most recent album, released in 2008, is titled Nobody Left to Crown, which features the following lyric in its title song: “Home, home on the range/Where the fear and the antidotes play/Where seldom is heard an encouraging word/And our leaders do nothing all day.”

It’s an idea he never relinquished. 

After bonding with John over 1930s pop songs, Paul said he dreamed of putting together a collection of their old favorites.

That dream is now a reality with Paul’s new album, the one he says is the album he always wanted to make with The Beatles. Kisses On The Bottom will be released on February 6 and features 12 covers plus two original songs.

During a press conference last Thursday, Paul talked about the album that was inspired by the soundtrack of his and John’s childhood.

“I wanted to do [music like this] in The Beatles, [but] every time I came to this album someone else would do it.”  Ringo Starr did it in 1970 with his Sentimental Journey record. “I kept saying, ‘Well I can’t do it now, it’ll look like I’m jumping on the bandwagon.’ But then I [decided] I’d just do it and not worry about the market.”

According to Paul, the key to the record was “channelling Fred Astaire. We’d [Paul and producer Tommy LiPuma] pull up chords and lyrics … kick it around and record it. I think that’s why I had so much fun doing it. It was just made up on the spot. No preconceived ideas.”

Think it’s far-fetched that John Lennon would sign on to such a project? Consider the fact that John Lennon‘s first commercially recorded vocal with The Beatles was the song “Ain’t She Sweet,” written in 1927!

It was on this day in 1956 that Police in what is now the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Ohio, announced their intention to enforce a law dating to 1931  banning Rock and Roll fans 18 and under from dancing in public unless accompanied by an adult.

Playing tonight in 1966 at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England was……quick for $10,000 in Cash…….no, not the Beatles 1966, it was….Stevie Wonder.

967, Pink Floyd spent the first of three days recording the Syd Barrett songs Arnold Layne and Candy And A Current Bun at Sound Techniques Studios, Chelsea, London. According to Roger Waters, Arnold Layne was based on a real person – a transvestite whose primary pastime was stealing women’s clothes and undergarments from washing lines in Cambridge.

1971, Steel Mill played their final show when they appeared at the Upstage Club, Asbury Park, New Jersey. Singer Bruce Springsteen formed new bands during the rest of the year known under such names as the Bruce Springsteen Jam, Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom, and finally the Bruce Springsteen Band.

It was on this day in 1971 the first Beatle to have a solo #1 hit got it….okay, quick same $10,000….sorry not fast enough….George Harrison with “My Sweet Lord”.

My Sweet Lord, he was a good guitar player, but on this day in1978, Terry Kath of Chicago accidentally shot himself dead while cleaning what he believed was an unloaded gun. Kath’s last words were “Don’t worry it’s not loaded”.

It was on this day in 1988 at a little triangular shaped building on Leary Way in Ballard…it’s still there…the guitarist from Skin Yard, Jack Endino, recorded a 10-song-demo of a little band from Aberdeen going by the name Nirvana …sent it over to his friend Jon Poneman at Sub Pop records…neither of them had any idea what would happen after that.

And it was on this day in 1990, Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins died of pneumonia…he and Ronnie Van Zandt wrote most of Skynyrd’s hits…yes, incuding Freebird….Collins survived the plane crash that killed Ronnie and Steve and Cassie Gaines, but had been paralyzed since an alcohol fueled car crash in the mid 80′s

Phantom Danny Federici would be 62 today had he not died 4 years ago….he played organ, accordion, and the good ‘ol Glockenspiel in Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street Band

And one of the best voices in Rock and Roll….Robin Zander of Cheap Trick hits the big 60 today…born in…..Beloit Wisconsin, but he always threw people with a cover of a song by Jeff Lynn’s pre-ELO band The Move called “California Man“

His exhibitionist neighbor, the Giant Naked Lady, is getting on Danny’s nerves, in part because she invited over Big Fat Naked Guy for an impromptu Beatles Rock Band jam session. Danny gives an update on the shooting of his Syfy movie about Bigfoot, lamenting his lack of acting chops and admitting he doesn’t know how the movie ends.

What was your lamest excuse for being late or not coming in to work? When he was in high school, Danny’s grandparents died…twice. One caller told his boss he was abducted by aliens and experimented on. Another told his boss that the voices in his head were telling him to stay home and clean his guns.

Keep that thought, because here is some cold, hard proof from 1993.

The Associated Press reports “Grateful Dead: The Long, Strange Trip” will feature manuscripts, handwritten notes, five Jerry Garcia guitars, Hart’s custom-painted drum kit and promoter Bill Graham‘s “Father Time” robe.

It was on this day in 1969, Led Zeppelin appeared at the Wheaton Youth Center, in Wheaton Maryland, during their first North American tour. Apparently not many rock fans and lots of Republicans in Wheaton MD, glued to the TV that night for Richard Nixon’s inauguration, because only 55 people showed up….the smallest crowd Led Zeppelin ever played to….still, they were paid a whopping $250.

It was tonight in 1982 in Des Moines, Iowa, one of the more famous incidents in rock history, really….what better way to express your love for Ozzy Osbourne than to throw a bat at him?  Of course being a bat, it was stunned by all the stage lighting, and lay there motionless…so it’s not surprising that Ozzy thought it was fake….and naturally being the Prince of Darkness and all went to bite it’s head off….but when the bat started flapping it’s wings Ozzy realized it was real AND had the presence of mind to know that Bats are big carriers of Rabies….Which requires a whole bunch of very painful shots.

And it was on this day in 1988, The Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Yoko, Sean, and Julian Lennon all attend. Paul McCartney does not attend, sending instead a letter stating that continuing business differences with the other ex-Beatles was the reason for his absence.

Country singer Slim Whitman is 88, not a rock and roll person, but if you’ve ever seen the movie Mars Attacks, you now his voice can make aliens heads explode….and that’s pretty cool.

Ian Hill, bass player for Judas Priest is 61.

And finally, the Starchild is 60….Stanley Harvey Eisen, who most of you wouldn’t recognize without his starchild make up or without his stage name…Paul Stanley of Kiss….Kiss have been awarded 24 gold albums to date….the most of any American rock band.

For many people, it’s Angry Birds. For Danny, it’s Angry Lesbians. He’s having noise issues with his neighbors, and he’s the source of the noise. Speaking of issues, Danny offers to travel to Los Angeles and pummel the Los Angeles Times reporter who referred to us as “snow wimps.”

Turns out Eva Longoria went to the same L.A. tattoo removal doctor as Danny did when she wanted tattoos related to Tony Parker removed from her body. Danny had that doctor’s logo tattooed on his wrist so it could be removed, but the doctor liked it so much he paid Danny extra to keep it.

Despite how long they’ve worked together, Danny and Sarah have never participated in a show outing, though yesterday they managed to get together for an outing – a trip to the walk-in clinic so Danny could get treatment for his stomach cramps. Will went along too. Mike Jones acts like he’s offended that he wasn’t invited, but he really isn’t.

Danny Bonaduce, Life Coach, advised a man whose girlfriend has been in the habit of bringing home other girls for him but now she wants to end that habit, and he doesn’t.

A new study finds that allowing your spouse to have a boys’ night out or a girls’ night out will improve your sex life, but Danny thinks group outings, even with members of the same sex, are a really bad idea.

All this, and a phrase Danny thinks Elton John’s spouse probably should never use, on today’s Danny Bonaduce Show.

Most of those affected are customers of Puget Sound Energy, which said it had restored service to 87,000 customers who lost power in the snowstorm that began Wednesday. But the utility it could take into the weekend or later to get the power back on for the roughly quarter million additional homes and businesses still in the dark.

The National Weather Service said warming temperatures Friday should melt snow and ice in Western Washington lowlands as the forecast returns to normal — rain — into next week. Forecasters said the melting snow could cause urban and small stream flooding and fill the Skokomish and Chehalis rivers above flood stage by Saturday evening.

It was still snowing in the Cascades, with up to 2 feet possible in the mountains over the weekend. In Eastern Washington, forecasters expect more snow Friday or freezing rain before warming temperatures on Saturday raise the snow level above the valley floors in some areas.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire declared a state of emergency, authorizing the use of National Guard troops if necessary.

Oregon should see a break in the rainfall for some hours before another front comes in, said meteorologist Paul Tolleson in Portland, Ore.

“We’ll have decent fronts for the next 24 to 36 hours. It’ll be just enough rain to make people nervous,” he said.

The unusually strong system temporarily shut down Seattle’s airport Thursday. Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air canceled 310 flights to and from Seattle Thursday and Alaska Air said it was canceling 50 flights on Friday.

The storm knocked down so many trees that Washington State Patrol troopers brought chainsaws in their cruisers to hack through the obstacles.

It also left three people dead: a mother and her 1-year-old boy, killed after torrential rain swept away a car from an Albany, Ore., grocery store parking lot; and an elderly man fatally injured by a falling tree as he was backing an all-terrain vehicle out of a backyard shed near Seattle.

More than 50 downed trees on railroad tracks and the threat of more falling forced Amtrak officials to close service between Portland and Seattle on Thursday morning. The closure continued Friday.

Officials in Spokane declared a snow emergency, banning parking along arterials and bus routes beginning Thursday evening. The City of Seattle asked people to get home before dark if possible, fearing even worse icing conditions by nightfall. And authorities told pedestrians to be extra careful on sidewalks and to look out for “falling ice from trees, buildings and power lines.”

The National Weather Service said the last widespread freezing rain in Seattle was in December 1996.

The weather system also dropped snow on Washington’s Mount Rainier, where four people were reported missing. A search was suspended at nightfall but was to resume Friday.

In the Willamette Valley town of Scio, Ore., many residents evacuated as the city manager said water was pouring down Main Street.

Officials in the city of Turner, Ore., issued a voluntary evacuation order to people, asking them to flee to higher ground as floodwaters from the rising Mill Creek swept through town.

To the west of Oregon’s Coast Range, residents were being moved out of Mapleton, Ore., with a population of about 900.

Near Reno, Nev., winds gusting up to 82 mph pushed a fast-moving brush fire south out of control on Thursday as it burned several homes, threatened dozens more and forced thousands to evacuate their neighborhoods.

The storm system also brought blowing snow to northwest Colorado as high winds battered the Front Range, with more heavy snow expected over the weekend.

It was on this day in 1998, rock and roll lost one of its pioneers… rockabilly guitarist Carl Perkins, who died in Nashville at  65.. Blue Suede Shoes was his biggest hit, but it was a bigger hit for Elvis Presley…. he recorded at the same Sun Records studio as Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis… the four of them sang there together once….later to be called….the million dollar quartet…Carl never quite as famous as the rest of the quartet, but hugely influential…. Elvis did his songs, Hendrix did his songs, and the Beatles to name a few.

The former Beatle confirmed he will be taking the stage at the star-studded event on his website today, which airs on February 12th.

Paul McCartney: The Early…

Already the recipient of fourteen GRAMMY awards, Sir Paul looks to make it fifteen this year. He’s nominated for Best Historical Album for Band On The Run (Paul McCartney Archive Collection — Deluxe Edition).

I think that might be one of the categories that doesn’t air, but with Macca in the running, that could change.

And it will be interesting to see what he decides to perform on GRAMMY night. Will it be a classic from the very album he is nominated for?

Or will he perform a track from his new album, Kisses on the Bottom.

The GRAMMY Awards also appear to be breaking from a recent tradition of not having a host by handing the reigns over to LL Cool J.

Not sure if that’s a good thing or not. He’s not exactly a comedian and I don’t think America wants to spend their time counting how many times he licks his lips.

The 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on 12th February and features other performances from the likes of Foo Fighters, Rihanna and Coldplay.

Danny contends technology is ruining snow days, as so many of us have no excuse not to work. Fortunately, Danny’s driving skills are not so bad that he has an excuse not to work.

Who is the cooler James Bond, Sean Connery or Daniel Craig? Danny says Sean, but Mike Jones plays audio that makes Craig sound really cool as 007, and audio from Connery as Bond slamming one of Danny’s most beloved cultural icons, not cool. Cheech Marin joins the show live to give his opinion on the Bond debate, and to promote his new CBS comedy, “Rob,” and is sent off with Danny’s story of seeing more of Sean Connery than he had expected during a visit to a water park.

Otis lived a long life and didn’t waste a second of it. Over the course of his 90 years, most of which he spent in the music industry, there is little that Otis didn’t do. The rhythm & blues singer is best remembered, though, for his contributions to music.

Born in Vallejo, California in 1921, Johnny started his first band at the young age of 24 after performing with a variety of swing orchestras. His hit “Harlem Nocturne” was one of the most enduring songs of the big band era.

He later pared down his band into an R&B outfit, dubbed it the California Rhythm and Blues Caravan, and went on to earn a long string of  hits in the early 1950s.

Members of Otis’s band over the years are a virtual who’s who of famous musicians, many of whom left his band to follow successful solo careers and pet projects. Some of the more noteworthy acts to come out of the band are Etta James, members of The Coasters, Hank Ballard, Little Esther, and Johnny’s son Shuggie Otis.

As a record producer, he uncovered even more incredibly talented musicians who would go on to have very successful and lucrative careers, including Jackie Wilson, Little Willie John, and Ballard, just to name a few.

In 1958, he recorded his monster hit “Willie and the Hand Jive.” In tribute to the late-great Johnny Otis, here’s the hit that you’ve all heard (Eric Clapton later covered it) but maybe never knew the name of.

A new year, another new beer to try.  I headed out to a restaurant in Belltown I like, and tasted a local beer I’ve seen in a lot of establishments.  The restaurant is Tilikum Place Cafe, and the beer was Old Seattle Lager from Maritime Pacific Brewing Company.

Tilikum Place Cafe has come through with consistently tasty food, and I was excited to do my beer of the week from there.  They don’t offer many beers on tap, instead they are loyal to Maritime Pacific Brewing Company.  Fine with me, because after one sip I was sold.  This brew is a bit cloudy, has honey overtones, but isn’t overly sweet.  It’s perfectly carbonated.  Has a good hint of bitterness and a dry aftertaste.  Simply said, the taste is superb.  It’s very flavorful, but on lower end of alcohol content, at 4.3%.  All that means is I can enjoy more of them!  This is what many call a ‘session beer’, a term that comes from the UK where they certainly have long drinking sessions.  I’ll be drinking this one again…and again…and certainly I’ll be back to Tilikum Place Cafe for tasty snacks.

Yea, we do too. And we’re not liars.

Bruce is definitely going big in 2012 with a worldwide tour and brand new album. Along with the release of his latest single, “We Take Care of Our Own,” we also received more details regarding the album.

Written by Tom Waits in 1980, the song is a simple but tranquilly beautiful love ballad sung in adoration of an unnamed “Jersey Girl.”

Given the subject matter, it was perhaps inevitable that Jersey’s own favorite son would want to release a cover of the song, which he did in 1984 (appropriately, as the B -Side to “Cover Me”). Waits, who is no stranger to having his songs covered (songwriting brilliance combined with a voice that could generously be called ‘gravelly’ tends to lead to covers), apparently approved of the effort, as he has appeared on stage to sing the song with Springsteen.

For his part, Springsteen was clearly taken by the song and has included it in later compilations and boxed sets, as well as performing it in concert on many occassions (his first cover of it, in fact, dates from a Meadowlands concert three years before he released it in recorded form). It is said that even though he did not write the song, Springsteen feels the character singing it is the same guy from his earlier songs “Sandy” and “Rosalita”, who has now grown up and gotten his Jersey Girl.

It was on this day in 1964, Beatle-mania began in earnest in the US of A when ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ entered the charts at No.45 just ten days after its release, making it the fastest-breaking and the fastest selling single in Capitol Records history. It was on this day in 1981, Wendy O. Williams of The Plasmatics… was arrested on stage at Milwaukee and was charged with the offence of simulating sex with a sledgehammer. She later filed a multimillion dollar civil suit against the Milwaukee Police, claming they sexually assaulted and beat her during the arrest, but a jury of her peers gave her the thumbs down….Peers? Where did they find 9 angry women in mohawks with black electrical tape over their nipples?.

And set the wayback machine for 1984, Mr. Peabody….Van Halen kicked off their 103-date ‘1984‘ North American tour in Jacksonville, Florida….the beginning of the end for Van Halen with David Lee Roth…..until now..

In other news, if you saw a body in a lake, how long would it be before you went back in that lake? Sarah says three years. Danny says he’d just push the body out of the way with a stick.

Danny made a huge mess in the station kitchen but managed to clean it up before the commercials ended, and we learn that this sort of thing, instant messes, happens wherever Danny goes. Danny’s wife chimes in to describe the huge mess Danny made with hot chocolate yesterday and his complete lack of interest in doing anything about it.

Lee Callahan gives the latest on the weather and road conditions, and callers offer contrasting viewpoints on whether people should stay home or get out and have fun.

It had been nearly 10 years since the Allman Brothers had released a studio album when they put out Seven Turns in 1990. With Jaimoe returning to the fold, they were back to their classic rhythm section, welcoming Allen Woody aboard to handle the bass parts and Warren Haynes in the mix on lead guitar.

On the strength of this lineup, Seven Turns turned out a trio of songs that hit the rock radio charts. Along with “It Ain’t Over Yet” (which reached #26) and “Good Clean Fun” (which was a #1), there was the #12 charting title track, “Seven Turns.”

Opening with a delicate acoustic riff and a touch of dobro, the Dickey Betts penned track featured the “Ramblin’ Man” himself handling the vocal duties. Jaimoe and Butch sound as comfortable together as they did in ’71 and Warren turns in the kind of class-A slide solo that’s made him a legend.

The soulful call and response of Dickie and Gregg drives the record home, worthy of being called an Allman Brothers classic.

It was on this day in 1967, The British newspaper Daily Mail ran a story about a local council survey finding 4,000 holes in the road in Lancashire. You wouldn’t think an article like that would make good song lyrics, but John Lennon did.

And it was on the same day, The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded a session for Radio Luxembourg’s “Ready Steady Radio”. The band ran up a bar bill of £2.5 shillings, ($6.21), which they were unable to pay.

It was on this day that Led Zeppelin’s first album was released in the US of A to coincide with their first ever American tour as headliners….of course they’d already played here in Seattle once, and been taped at Gonzaga University in Spokaloo….they’d be back here in May for a show at the Greenlake Aquatheatre.

And it was on this day in 1994 the former Teen Idol who sang “Puppy Love” Donny Osmond took part in a charity boxing match held in Chicago against the former Partridge Family bass player Danny Bonaduce….. Donny lost 2-1.

Danny tries to come up with a title for Will, and shares his dream about Sarah’s boobs. Over the weekend, Danny started shooting his Syfy movie about Bigfoot. He can’t say much about it, but he does reveal that Bigfoot is 20 feet tall!

In the wake of the Italian cruise ship disaster, Danny relates the story of his most disastrous vacation, when he accidentally booked a stay with his wife at a swingers resort. This leads to an enlightening call from a lady who identifies herself as a swinger and sheds light on her lifestyle.

Danny Bonaduce, Life Coach, assists a listener who can hear way too much from her neighbor through the thin walls of her townhouse.

Danny reveals the few details he can about his Bigfoot movie, such as, the cast includes Barry Williams, Sherilyn Fenn, Howard Hesseman, and Billy Idol.

Not only that, but Sarah’s Filthy Forecast, Danny unveils his bobblehead, and Danny offers to get Will’s and Mike’s names tattooed on his butt, on today’s episode of The Danny Bonaduce Show.

McLean played with Pete Seeger during the ’60s, when Seeger was promoting environmental causes. McLean’s pet musical project during this period was a tribute to painter Vincent Van Gogh. No record label was interested in it, but he did get the chance to make an album called Tapestry in 1970. One of his songs, “And I Love You So,” became a big hit for crooner Perry Como later that year.

The album American Pie came out of nowhere in 1971, reaching #1. The album also contained the gorgeous “Vincent,” left over from the Van Gogh project, which followed “American Pie” up the charts. The flipside of the “Vincent” single, “Castles in the Air,” a song from Tapestry, also got airplay in the wake of “American Pie.”

Unlike some artists who are content to milk a formula for all the dollars it can generate, McLean was unwilling to do “American Pie” over and over. His next four albums of acoustic pop got little attention. In 1980, however, he returned to prominence briefly with Chain Lightning, an album on which he’s backed by a cast of Nashville players and covers several familiar songs including Roy Orbison‘s “Crying,” which became his biggest hit since “American Pie.”

McLean has continued to perform and record steadily since 1980, last releasing an album of original songs in 2009. For a long while, he didn’t perform “American Pie,” and he’s still not fond of talking about it.

In 2012, however, he will embark on a 40th anniversary tour celebrating the song and the album. European dates have been announced; stateside dates are likely to follow.

Here’s “Vincent,” set to a montage of Van Gogh’s paintings. If he’d never recorded “American Pie,” he’d still be remembered for this.

Not only has the band been able to log studio time with Steven on their upcoming album, but according to Tyler, sales of their earlier efforts are high and it’s all because of his Idol stint. The rocker told Access Hollywood that the show has “brought younger kids to our music” and sales are up 260 percent.

According to Artisan News, Rob Halford, Lemmy Kilmister, Ian Gillan, Alice Cooper, Glenn Hughes, Sebastian Bach and Dave Grohl are just some of the names on the record, which Wendy hopes to have out before the end of the year. The 57-year old local resident said he bought them from a random truck driver for 500 roubles ($15.81) to heat his home.

The fully functional rifles, produced in 1959-1960, were on their way to a recycling plant from Izhmash, one of the country’s oldest arms manufacturing plants, the company said, when they wound up in the man’s possession.

A deadly mixture of corner cutting and negligence continues to plague Russia’s defense industry 20 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, with Russia still the world’s second-largest arms exporter.

“I imagine how scared the West is of our nuclear arms,” a Facebook user Oleg Zabara wrote in a comment on Rogozin’s post. “Not because they exist, but because they could accidentally fall on them (by mistake), just like those rifles got to that old man.”

It was not immediately clear if the driver was aware that he was carrying firearms in the boxes he rushed to cash in on, but investigators said a probe will look into the incident.

17th Annual Critics Choice Awards:…

After a montage that highlighted his feature films, work in musical documentaries and introductions from Leonardo DiCaprio and Olivia Harrison, Bob Dylan wowed the crowed and received a long standing ovation.

Bob Dylan is definitely a hot commodity for awards shows who want to bring crowds to their feet. The same response was seen during the 2011 GRAMMY Awards, when Dylan was joined by Mumford and Sons and the Avett Brothers.

Though I think most of the fun was had by the two bands who got to perform with the legendary folk singer, who were wearing their “Holy crap… we’re playing with BOB DYLAN!” faces.

“Such a great honor and an amazing performance by the great one, Bob Dylan,” Scorsese said before accepting his award.

The two aren’t strangers either. They worked together on No Direction Home, a documentary by Scorsese that follows the life of Bob Dylan and the impact he had on American popular music and culture. No Direction Home covers the years between Dylan’s arrival in New York in January of 1961 and his “retirement” from touring, following his motorcycle accident in July of 1966.

Trevor Rabin is 58, BOTD in Johannesburg South Africa….played guitar in the South African Army’s Entertainment Division when he got drafted at 19…became a big-shot studio musician….moved to England and played with a fellow South-African….Manfred Mann…for a while….hooked up with Chris Squire and Alan White just in time for the revival of Yes with their massive hit 90125 album.

Wayne Coyne is 50 the frontman of the Oklahoma City based Flaming Lips, who some of you may know as one of those “alternative” rock bands, but…when I ran sound for them at their first Seattle appearance back in the 80′s….they played their first album and were then out of songs so….Who covers for the rest of the evening, and they were really good at it!

Northwest Nice is everywhere, as Danny has a string of encounters with people who seem to be extraordinarily happy to be in their jobs.

The album went to #1 in both the United States and Britain, netted the band a GRAMMY, and went on to sell over 40 million copies worldwide.

But while this golden era for Fleetwood Mac’s music began in 1977, its harbinger was this song, released the year before.

“Go Your Own Way”, released in December of 1976, was the first single from Rumours, a preview of the things to come. It went to #10 on the U.S. charts.

Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks shared songwriting duties almost equally three ways on Rumours. “Go Your Own Way” was a Buckingham contribution, and describes the end of his on-again/off-again relationship with Nicks, the most cutting line from the lyrics being “Packing up, shacking Up is all you want to do.“

Nicks denied she had ever shacked up with anyone, and wanted the line removed, but Buckingham didn’t relent, and it remained. It was one of many domestic problems that plagued the band during the creation of Rumours and its subsequent tour (the biggest coming last, the divorce of McVie with husband and fellow bandmate John McVie). It is a credit to Fleetwood Mac’s professionalism, if nothing else, that they were able to mint an album like Rumours amid such personal turmoil.

1977, Rolling Stone Keith Richards was fined £750 ($1,275) for possession of cocaine found in his car after the guitarist had been involved in a car crash….and while Keith was in court…..The Police had their first rehearsal, held at drummer’s Stewart Copeland’s London apartment.

On this day in 1993, No one ever thought it would happen, but it did….Cream got back together for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Other inductees that evening included The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival — whose leader, John Fogerty, refused to play with the other two surviving members, and Van Morrison, who didn’t show up…the first living inductee to snub the Rock Hall.

And in 2005, It was announced that the Strawberry Field Children’s Home in Woolton, Liverpool, England was closing it’s doors forever

And a British rock and roll and blues singer who gave Elton John and Rod Stewart their first shots, played with future Rolling Stones and Cream members in Alexis Corner’s Blues Incorporated…John William Baldry, better known as “Long John” because he was 6′ 7″…..moved to Vancouver BC and became Canadian in the late 70′s….and found a second career as a voice actor…he died up there in 2005, or he would be 71 today

He would grow to be six feet, seven inches tall, which would lead to the nickname by which he’s known: Long John Baldry. He’s also known for helping to launch the careers of several prominent rock figures.

Baldry was one of the top blues players in England from the late ’50s, the homegrown hero to a generation of fans, most of whom were almost the same age. Rod Stewart credits Baldry with discovering him: “I was 18 and playing harmonica and singing a Muddy Waters song in a railway station when Long John Baldry ran over to me from the other side of the tracks. I had just been to see him play at a club … And now he was asking, ‘Would you like to join the band?’” Members of the Rolling Stones and Cream played in Baldry’s early-’60s bands. Elton John did too, and when he was adopting that stage name, he took the surname John as a tribute to Baldry.

Baldry scored pop hits in the UK as a performer and producer throughout the late ’60s, but it was 1971 before he got much traction in the United States with the album It Ain’t Easy, which marked a return to his earlier blues-rock sound. Side one of the album was produced by Rod Stewart and featured Ron Wood on guitar. Side two was produced by Elton John.

The song for which Baldry is best known in the United States comes from Stewart’s side. “Don’t Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” is introduced by a long monologue titled “Conditional Discharge,” and it’s something you’ve got to hear.

10. Rock Star (2001)

In a plot borrowed from Ripper Owens’ temporary replacement of Rob Halford in Judas Priest, copier repairman Mark Wahlberg gets to sing with his idols Steel Dragon. The soundtrack mixes custom-written songs with covers played by real musicians and lip-synched by the singers. Though not especially deep, it provides some amusement and the chance to dig Jennifer Anniston as the long-suffering girlfriend.

9. Top Secret! (1984)

Almost too stupid to resist, Val Kilmer plays a West Coast surfer on a cultural mission to East Germany, where he breaks into song at the drop of the hat (in the spirit of the great musicals of our time). He twists himself into a frenzy on “Cut the Rug” but stops the show with “Tutti Frutti.”

8. Velvet Goldmine (1998)

As the character named Brian Slade, Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays the androgynous David Bowie character, Ewan McGregor channels Iggy Pop and Christian Bale plays the journalist with a need to know. A collective of Brit session players credited as Venus in Furs provide the music (with Meyers and McGregor doing some singing). Sex, drugs, rock and roll, with plenty of puffy shirts and velvet jackets from wardrobe.

7. Josie and the Pussycats (2001)

Rachel Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson and Tara Reid star as “three small town girls with big time dreams” (or something like that). It’s all about tongue in cheek satire,  music business skullduggery and brainwashing, plenty of product-placement sight gags and running jokes about narcissism and insecurity. Ten years later, it’ll seem “uncool” to the teenage girls for whom it was created, but there’s enough here to give you a laugh or two and help you kill 90 minutes. Perfect for people with the flu.

6. Walk Hard – The Dewey Cox Story (2007)

John C. Reilly is Dewey Cox, conglomeration of  Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison, with all the gifts and fruitful hormones that come with it. Reverence to the biopic approach makes it all that much more amusing, particularly as Cox graduates to even greater drugs and debauchery with every passing decade (much like we did, right)?

5. Purple Rain (1984)

Depending on your point of view, it’s iconic 1980s rock film at its best or it’s narcissistic trash. We think it’s a little of both: the concert scenes are great, Prince‘s sulking is sometimes too hard to take. Apollonia saves the day most of the time, if only for the costumes. We couldn’t find an official trailer but we’ll assume you know what it looks like.

It’s not about Carly Simon’s former husband, James Taylor, she’s confessed (though he did take a plane to Nova Scotia not long after the song came out). Nor is it about Mick Jagger, whose appearance as a backup singer on the song was nothing near the ruse that has become of rock legend. (He happened to be in town at the time of the recording.)

The most we will ever know about the person who is “so vain” in Carly’s biggest hit is that she had three or four different people in mind when she wrote the song. She’s not confessing to anything more than that.

She does give props to producer Richard Perry, though, whose perfectionism Simon has credited the song’s great success and lasting influence.

It spent three weeks at #1 starting January 6, 1973.

It was in a Tom Douglas restaurant that I had my beer of the week this week.  I took along my best pal Danny Bonaduce, his wife (and fellow beer lover) Amy and my fiance Matt.  We drank beer and ate fresh made pretzels.  Does life get any better?

We went to The Brave Horse Tavern in South Lake Union.  They offer an impressive menu of beers on tap and in the bottle.  Over 10 beers on tap, and they offer a variety of sizes.  I opted for the India Red Ale from Double Mountain.  This is a brewery in Oregon, who calls this IRA.  This beer is super good.  It’s bready and hoppy and smells great.  Nice on the tongue good too.  It clocks in at 6.5%.  It’s easy to drink, yet full bodied and lightly carbonated.  I’m quite impressed with this beer, and am looking forward to trying it again.  Matt had a beer from New Belgium Brewing Company in Colorado.  It’s a beer made via collaboration with his favorite band Clutch.  This is one of the most ‘in your face’ beers I’ve tasted in ages.  I only had a taste since this one clocks in at 9%.  Sour, chocolaty malty madness is the best way to describe it.  Matt, Danny, Amy and myself all had different things to drink, but we all ate pretzels and cheese curds.  Brave Horse had incredible fresh baked pretzels with a variety of dips and mustards.   YUM!

Well someone just shelled out 1,225 dollars for it on eBay. The single was only ever released in Australia and features lead vocals from the band’s original singer, Dave Evans. The B-side boasts another original song – “Rockin’ in the Parlour.” The single came out on May 8th, 1975 and went to number 19 on the Australian chart. It’s the band’s only recordings featuring Evans, who was replaced by Bon Scott.

Tyler, who feels “it’s really hot when you only show a little,” hopes the judges, who are looking at a First Amendment case on the regulation of the airwaves, keep bad language and graphic nudity off TV.

But Rod did get into a heated bidding war on Saturday night at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida during the annual Palm Beach Policemen’s Ball.

What was up for grabs?

“Sheriff for a day” in Palm Beach County. Stewart will get to meet with SWAT team members and crime-scene techs, have lunch with Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, and take a ride on the sheriff’s office’s helicopter.

All so the citizens of Palm Beach County can feel foot loose and fancy free.

According to Forbes, Stewart had to cough up $18,000 for the prize and will share the honor with billionaire Jeff Greene and philanthropist Michelle Herbert (They also paid $18,000).

The Big Man of Springsteen’s E Street Band…saxophonist Clarence Clemmons….is celebrating his 70th birthday in the great hereafter…we lost him last year.

And Yes‘ original keyboard player, Tony Kaye is 66.

It was on this day in 1963…one of America’s most famous Rock and Roll night clubs opened it’s doors….The Whiskey-a-Go-Go on the Sunset strip….three years later The Doors were pretty much the House Band there…and the place is still there, despite the fact that Danny Bonaduce apparently has done it in the bathroom there.

On this day in 1967, Jimi Hendrix recorded the song he had written the day after Christmas 1966.sometime between then and now, he had changed the lyric from “Jesus Saves” to “Purple Haze.”

It was today in 1992 that Seattle’s own Nirvana appeared on Saturday Night Live…at the end of the show the band thought it would be fun and add shock value if they made out with each other while the saxophone music plays at the closing credits, but the NBC censors didn’t like it so much, and retaped the close with less tongue, which is why if you ever see that again, you’ll notice Kurt Cobain isn’t there.

And…It was on this day in 1964 when a version of a Richard Berry song recorded by a band from Portland…The Kingsmen… went to #1…Top of the Pops…of course a different version of Louie Louie recorded by Tacoma’s Wailers had already been a hit all over the PNW, which is why Ross Shafer used his Almost Live Bully pulpit to try and get it made the state song in 1985….he failed, but came close enough that Mariners fans still sing Louie Louie after the traditional “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at the 7th inning stretch….the governor of Indiana was so sure there was something dirty in the lyrics and had the song banned, which of course only made it more popular…but the FBI investigated….they couldn’t find anything dirty…..maybe you can….

A rumor circulating in the festival industry says Tony Iommi’s unfortunate illness forced the band to cancel a headlining gig at Coachella in California.

Black Sabbath Announce Reunion at Press…

After the troubling news that guitarist Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma, multiple sources close to Billboard said Ozzy & Co. were booked to headline the annual Indio, California festival.

But with Iommi’s diagnosis and the out-pouring of support, the band pulled out of the mid-April performance and any other shows they may have been planning up to that point. The rumor is that the festival found a last-minute replacement headliner in the decidedly un-metal Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg.

Yeah, apparently the closing set was originally the Sabbath reunion show, probably their first of the year (or at least the first major appearance). It’s not hard to believe this is all true; Coachella is well-known for delivering classic reunions. Despite losing Black Sabbath this year, they still have old punk/hardcore bands Pulp, Refused and At the Drive-In to satisfy those tastes.

All reports indicate that this cancellation is actually an isolated move, and the rest of the band’s tour remains intact. But now that we know they were slated to headline a major festival, does that mean they will be at others? A gap in their tour dates between June 7 and June 10 suggests they could play Bonnaroo like Buffalo Springfield did last year.

It also indicates they will probably play outside at the Comcast Center if and when they come around here. In the meantime, we still need to wait patiently for those North American tour dates. Perhaps those will come in April and May?

– Clemons had four sons from five marriages. His eldest son, Nick, is a working musician, although his father wanted him to be a lawyer.

– Clemons appeared in the video for Lady Gaga‘s “The Edge of Glory,” which premiered just a couple of days before he died last June.

– Clemons appeared as a trumpet player in the 1977 film New York, New York, in a 1985 episode of Diff’rent Strokes, and as one of the Most Important People in the World in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989.

The tour features set lists that in total have boasted over 200 different songs. The tour hit more than 30 cities in 2011, garnering acclaim at every turn. Elvis Costello & the Imposters play Seattle’s Paramount Theatre on April 12th and Portland’s Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall April 13th. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, January 14th at all Live Nation outlets and the venue box offices.

At each of the tour’s appearances select fans are invited on stage to spin “The Wheel”, helping to create new sets at each performance from a collection of 40 banners including hits, rarities, and a few surprises. The Wheel features “song titles and album references covering Costello’s hits and deeper work. When the wheel landed on ‘Detectives vs. Hoover Factory’, Costello told the audience they could vote for Watching the Detectives (huge roar) or the early rarely-performed Hoover Factory (surprisingly loud cheer). Then he played both, prefacing the latter with memories of riding the bus to his own factory job in London, back in 1973.”

If you are from the metro Detroit area, you know there is no such place as South Detroit. Thanks to an interview with original Journey front man, Steve Perry, however, we now know why he picked the false location.

In an interview with New York Magazine’s Vulture, Steve Perry revealed the process in writing their smash hit. He came up with the lyrics one morning in May of 1980. The band was in Detroit during their Departure tour. He told Vulture he was unable to sleep, stood staring out of his hotel room window at 2 a.m.

“I was digging the idea of how the lights were facing down, so that you couldn’t see anything,” he says, recalling the night. “All of a sudden I’d see people walking out of the dark, and into the light. And the term ‘streelight people’ came to me. So Detroit was very much in my consciousness when we started writing.“

As for the fictional South Detroit line, Perry claimed ignorance and poetic license.

“I ran the phonetics of east, west, and north, but nothing sounded as good or emotionally true to me as South Detroit,” he says. “The syntax just sounded right. I fell in love with the line. It’s only been in the last few years that I’ve learned that there is no South Detroit. But it doesn’t matter.“

“Do You Feel Like We Do” was originally released on the album Frampton’s Camel, in 1973.  For those wondering, the name simply comes from his the name of his touring band at the time … why they were called that will have to wait for a better-informed person than The Archivist to enlighten us all in the comments. Frampton’s Camel was not only Frampton’s first album recorded in the U.S. (New York, specifically), but also his first album recorded while working within the framework of a group.

After Camel, Frampton began feature “Do You Feel Like We Do” heavily in his live shows. but it is not really that exposure that made the song so well-known. Instead, it was his landmark album Frampton Comes Alive! in 1975.  The album was created based on the strength of his live performances, which producers felt were considerably stronger than his studio outings in many cases. “Do You Feel Like We Do” wasn’t originally intended to be part of Frampton Comes Alive!, but when Jerry Moss at A&M asked “Where’s the rest of it?”, it was decided to make it a double album to more fully capture the feeling of an entire Peter Frampton concert. “Do You Feel Like We Do”, which he often used as a closer, finished off the double album on side four.

It turned out to be a good decision. As one of three singles released from Frampton Comes Alive!, it was edited down to seven minutes, half its length from the album. Still, even as a relatively-lengthy single, the song went to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The success of the double album even netted Frampton an invitation to the White House from President Gerald Ford, who possibly may have been just a bit more hip than history has given him credit for.

Ronnie Hawkins is 77 today, he started out in Arkansas as a Rockabilly act, but it was up in Canada that things really took off for him….his backup band from Southwest Ontario…The Hawks….would eventually become….The Band….he also did time in the Full Tilt Boogie Band with Janis, and gave a young Pat Travers his start….among other things.

Scott McKenzie is 73 and once went to San Francisco with Flowers in his Hair, though these days he lives in LA.

Early 70′s hit machine Jim Croce would be 69 if he hadn’t died in a plane crash at age 30…..you know statistically flying in airplanes is one of the safest forms of travel…unless the occupation on your tax return says rock star.

Martin Turner is 65, bass player and lead singer of Wishbone Ash.

He’s now a commander of the Order of the British Empire, and probably the second most beloved person in Scotland behind Sean Connery, but he was born in Highgate, North London where eventually he became a grave digger at the famous cemetery there….until he started singing down-a-pub…with Long John Balry…the Jeff Beck Group….the The Faces…and not a bad little solo career…..Rod “The Mod” Stewart is 67.

Aynsley Dunbar is 66, a very good limey drummer who’s played with some of rocks greats…. Eric Burdon, John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Ian Hunter, Lou Reed, Jefferson Starship, Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Whitesnake, Sammy Hagar, Michael Schenker, UFO, ….and he also played in Journey.

Patricia Mae Andrzejewski is 59 today…a rock and roll singer who shoved her high heeled boot into a very male-dominated industry in the early 80′s…the second performer ever played on MTV….you know her better by her stage name Pat Benatar.

Rudy Schenker from the Scorpions little brother Michael is 57….he started out in the Scorpions in fact, but when they went to England and opened for UFO… they stole him.

And finally a man who admitted fairly recently that his famous band’s first show was right here in Seattle, opening for the James Gang in the Paramount….Donald Fagen, keyboard player, singer, and principal hit writer of Steely Dan is 64.
