RM Sotheby‘s held their inaugural Driven By Disruption collectible car auction in New York City Thursday night and a few items on the engine, er, auction block made a notable splash among potential bidders.
An item of noted interest is Janis Joplin’s psychedelic 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet. Early estimates believed the car — which was purchased by Joplin in 1968, two years prior to her death — would be won with a bid between $400,000 and $600,000; instead, it took $1.76 Million.
According to a post on Janis Joplin’s official Facebook page, the “funds will go to support new projects, educational efforts, and other endeavors to grow Janis’ legacy.”
