On Minimation, we comb through the CBS Radio interview archives and animate interviews with legendary artists. In this interview from 2014, Nils Lofgren recalls his first tour as a member of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and the trampoline that he brought on the tour with him.
August 5 of this week marks the 30th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s first stadium headlining tour; he was promoting his then-recent smash hit album, Born in the U.S.A. That tour, which began the year before in arenas, was the band’s first to feature guitarist Nils Lofgren, who replaced long time E Street Band member Steven Van Zandt.
Nils was, and still is, a respected solo artist in his own right, and as a bandleader he knew a thing or two about entertaining a crowd. He was also one of the more athletic rock stars. And so it was that he suggested to his new boss that he take his trampoline on the road with the E Street Band, and perform a flip while playing guitar during the show.
