By Scott Vanderpool

Why?  Because the Fender Musical Instrument Company, maker of the iconic Stratocaster guitar made famous by Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton to name but a few, has come out with a new line of Strats specifically targeted at baseball fans…so long as they’re not fans of teams Fender doesn’t appear to like, including your Seattle Mariners.

12 teams get the honor (there’s also an “All Star Game” model honoring host city Minneapolis, though the Twins don’t get one either), but being “good” is obviously not a prerequisite, in fact all of the teams currently dead last in the National League get their own Stratocasters. The Milwaukee Brewers are currently leading the NL Central, and Seattle fans can we suppose take some solace in the fact that they started out…for one year (1969)…as the Seattle Pilots. Which would give the Seattle baseball fan about as much thrill as Sonics fans buying an Oklahoma City Thunder guitar. The only team from our division honored are the confusingly-named 2nd place Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Certainly they’ll sell a Chicago Cubs model to Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder (he grew up in Evanston IL)…

And Joe Perry of Aerosmith will no doubt have to have a Boston Red Sox axe…

But who would buy a New York Yankees guitar except to give it the Pete Townsend treatment?

Fender is currently celebrating the 60th anniversary of Leo Fender’s invention.

Check out Fender’s MLB Stratocasters here….and then go buy a Gibson Les Paul, SG, or maybe a Rickenbacker 360.
