On Saturday, (March 1) Springsteen took the stage by himself in Lorde’s hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, with his acoustic guitar and harmonica to play “Royals.” He managed to give the GRAMMY-award winning track a folk makeover, using the guitar like a drum to keep the beat.
According to Backstreets, he opened his second-ever gig in New Zealand with his cover. He even changed up the lyrics a bit, proclaiming himself the “King Bee” and letting the crowd know, “Long ago I was the next big thing/ Now I’m in love with being king.”
Springsteen has been pulling out several covers, some which even correspond with the country he’s playing. While on tour in South America last September, he covered Chilean and Argentinian folk songs in Spanish. The following month, he posted his cover of Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream” from one of his earlier shows. More recently, he’s covered AC/DC, INXS and the Bee Gees on his Australian tour stops.
Currently, fans are able to download the complete audio of each concert from Springsteen’s current tour, which has made stops in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, within 48 hours after the show ends. Just head to his website.
