Paul McCartney and Pete Best of the Beatles were arrested in Germany today in 1960. Their crime? They stuck a condom to a brick wall and lit it on fire. They were asked to leave Germany, probably because they’d already been booted out of the country once, but that time it was hotel room they lit on fire.
The Beatles played their last show in their hometown of Liverpool today in 1965 when they played the Liverpool Empire on their last-ever British tour. Capacity was only 5100, but there were over 40,000 applications for the tickets.
Tonight in 1967 was the final date of a 16-stop British tour with The Pink Floyd, The Move, The Nice, and headliner The Jimi Hendrix Experience. For some reason the management at tonight’s venue found Jimi’s movements with his guitar overtly sexual, and closed the curtains halfway through his set.
The Rolling Stones celebrated the release of their new album Beggars Banquet with a Banquet tonight in London in 1968. Prodigious amounts of cocktails were served, and a food fight erupted later in the evening, but unlike the release party for Nirvana’s Nevermind years later, the band was not asked to leave their own party.
Big rock and roll auction at Christie’s in New York today in 2006, with the top ticket being Paul McCartney’s handwritten lyrics to Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, which went for $192,000. Other items included A $25,000 Jim Morrison poem, and one of Jimi Hendrix’s Fender Stratocasters bought by a Mr. Paul Allen of Seattle for $185,000 which is now part of the EMP’s massive new Hendrix exhibit.

Blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson would be around 100 years old (he was never entirely sure what year he was born) if he had lived past 52…his songs were covered by Led Zeppelin….he wrote Bring It On Home…..and Pete Townsend made his song Eyesight to the Blind part of Tommy.
Little Richard is 80. Real name Richard Lee Peneman, he’s one of the most influential of rock’s early pioneers….Paul McCartney said Little Richard was his idol and he always wanted to sing like him….Jimi Hendrix, who actually played in Little Richard’s band for a while before he went to England and got famous said his goal was to make his guitar sound like Little Richards voice.
JJ Cale is 74, a songwriter whose songs have been covered by Tom Petty, Captain Beefheart, he wrote Call Me the Breeze, which was a big hit for Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Cocaine, as covered by Eric Clapton.
