Brian Jones Buys The Farm, Paul McCartney Plays For Astronauts: This Day In Classic Rock [Video]

The Beatles were holed up in a movie theater in Plymouth England where they were playing tonight in 1963, trying to figure out how to get to a TV studio down the block for an interview as the entire block was filled with crazed fans. They were smuggled into the building next door, then crawled through a tunnel to appear on the show “Move Over, Dad“.

Decca Records released The Rolling Stones version of Little Red Rooster today in 1964. They’d gone to Chicago for authenticity, and recorded it at Chess Studios, where Howlin’ Wolf had done the Willie Dixon song in 1961.

The Castiles played a show at the Fire House in Hazlet, New Jersey tonight in 1965. They were an entirely forgettable band, except that their singing guitar player was named Bruce Springsteen.

Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones bought Cotchford Farm south of London today in 1968. It had been previously owned by A. A. Milne, who wrote Winnie the Pooh there. Brian would be found at the bottom of the farm’s swimming pool a year and a half later.

Yellow Submarine opened in U.S. and Canadian movie theaters tonight in 1968. The animated feature film featured songs by The Beatles, but their voices were portrayed by actors, and they only appeared in a short cameo at the end.

Rod Stewart was at #1 on the charts today in 1976 with Tonight’s The Night despite it being banned by many radio stations for it’s racy content about the seduction of a virgin. The song featured alluring whispers by Rod’s then-girlfriend Britt Ekland.

Paul McCartney played a show at Angels Stadium in Anaheim California tonight in 2005. When the set list got to the Beatles Good Day Sunshine, the audio was beamed up to the international space station so Paul and the audience could deliver the astronauts a wake-up call.
