Muckleshoot Battle Of The Puget Sound Bands: Round II

Three bands enter. One band leaves. No wait, that was Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.  All the bands got to leave, in fact some of them had to scurry off to play other gigs, but only one band could win. And it’s a shame, because all of them were good, just like last week at The Muckleshoot Casino’s Battle of the Puget Sound Bands, where nine hardworking groups of musicians are competing for a piece of $30,000 in cash and prizes. Last night (8/22) was round two of the semi-finalists, chosen from among scores of entrants by fans voting on videos posted on the Muckleshoot Casino’s website.

First up was The Ultimate Sellout Band, coming off a gig at Seattle’s Hard Rock Café. These guys are a straight up Classic Rock cover band who do songs right off the KZOK playlist. They have a drummer with the cojonés to take on Neil Peart in a spot on rendition of The Spirit of Radio. Sadly, they came in third as several of them couldn’t stick around to vote for themselves: The guitarist also plays in an Alice In Chains tribute band called Jar Of Flies, and this Wednesday night would have been singer Layne Stayley’s 45th birthday. They also told me their gorgeous bass player is in three other bands.

Next up was an original blues-rock band, Palmer Junction, who won bonus points from me (though I, being a fair and impartial Master of Ceremonies, do not get to vote) for confessing that their absolute favorite performer ever is Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac. Their only cover song of the night was a Janis Joplin song handled nicely by their singer despite the fact that she didn’t get to warm up with a bottle of Southern Comfort the way Janis used to.  They won the night, and move on to face the first round winner (The Sho-Nuff Funk Band) and the winner of next Wednesday nights 3rd round of semifinalists.

Last up were the runners up, an incredibly tight rap-rock hybrid original band (though they did slay the ladies with a great cover of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together) coming hot off an appearance in front of over 100,000 at Seattle’s Hempfest. They call themselves Lion’s Ambition, and you will most likely be seeing them again at the Muckleshoot’s Club Galaxy, as in addition to competing for cash and prizes, this battle of the bands contest is also an on-stage audition for lucrative Club Galaxy gigs, and these guys brought it!

Next Wednesday, August 29th is the Third and final semi-final round. ONE of these three bands will be moving to the Grand Finale Friday August 31st to compete with Sho-Nuff-Funk and Palmer Junction:

  • Vibe Central
  • Joyfield
  • The Hookys

It’s lots of fun, and admission is FREE!
