The Beach Boys, who played Friday night at the Chateau St. Michelle Winery on their 50th anniversary tour, signed to Capitol Records 50 years ago today in 1962.

Eric Clapton, who’d quit the Yardbirds because he wanted to play blues instead of hippie psychedelic rock and then quit John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers because it was too confining, started the hippie psychedelic blues band Cream with Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker today in 1966. Clapton was a huge star in England, but not so much in the U.S. having quit the Yardbirds before their hippie psychedelic success with Jeff Beck. Cream changed all that in the two years they were together.

Pink Floyd were at the BBC studios in London today in 1970 recording John Peel’s Sunday Concert. The influential DJ started in 1967, was eventually made an O.B.E., and would continue his “Peel Sessions” until his death in 2004, and recorded hundreds of bands including many from the Pacific Northwest: Seattle’s Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden; Portland’s Pond, and Vancouver Island’s No Means No.

Desmond Dekker of Desmond Dekker and the Aces would be 72. He was one of the first Reggae/Ska artists to find success outside of Jamaica.

Highly influenced by Desmond Dekker is highly influential Police drummer Stewart Copeland, who is 60 today.
