This Day In Classic Rock: May 9th

It was tonight in 1966 that The Doors played the Whiskey-A-Go-Go nightclub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood.  They were auditioning to be the “House Band”, a gig they would get after a two-week run opening for Van Morrison’s Them in June.  They would last last until August, when they were fired after the profanity laced debut of the “Oedipal” part of The End.

It was today in 1969 that George Harrison released his least-popular solo album, Electronic Sounds, on Apple Records subsidiary label Zapple.  There were all of two songs, performed exclusively on Dr. Robert Moog’s synthesizer.

It was today in 1970 that the Canadian Guess Who’s Vietnam protest song American Woman hit #1 on the U.S. Charts.

It was tonight in 1978 that Tubes lead singer Fee Waybill, waving a chainsaw around on stage in London, fell off and broke his leg.

Bruce Springsteen made his American TV debut tonight in 1992, appearing on Saturday Night Live with host Tom Hanks.

Saturday Night Live tonight in 1998 featured rapper Sean “Puffy” Combs performing a song from the Godzilla remake soundtrack that sampled Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir, which a Les Paul wielding Jimmy Page came out and played live.

Rock And Roll Birthdays

Nokie Edwards is 77, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as guitar and bass player with Tacoma’s Ventures. He’s also an actor who appeared in HBO’s Deadwood miniseries.

Guitarist and songwriter Sonny Curtis is 75.  He was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Buddy Holly’s Crickets.  His most famous song, I Fought The Law, was a hit for both the Bobby Fuller Four and The Clash.

Guitarist Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield and Poco is 68.

Piano man Billy Joel is 63.

Cheap Trick’s bass player Tom Petersson is 62.

John “Rhino” Edwards, bass player for Status Quo, is 58
