It was today in 1957 that Buddy Knox became the first performer of the rock and roll era to have written his own number one hit: Party Doll.  In the post Beatles and Zeppelin era it is normal and expected for performers to write their own songs, but before Knox songwriters handed their compositions over to established stars, still standard procedure in the country music world.

Today in 1967 the Beatles took time out from recording Sgt. Pepper at Abbey road to head over to Chelsea Manor Studios to shoot the photo for the famous cover with Michael Cooper.  Then it was back to the studio to finish up “A Little help From My Friends”.

It was today in 1978 The Clash’s rhythm section Topper Headon and Paul Simonon were arrested in London for shooting down racing pigeons with air rifles from the roof of the studio they were recording at.  Four police cars and a helicopter were used in their apprehension, which resulted in fines of nearly $1500.

It was today in 2000 that Mick Jagger cut the ribbon on the new arts centre named for him at his old school, Dartford Grammar. Mick had said his years there were the worst of his life.

And today in 2007 a middle-aged man screaming “I must get to him!” drove around a gate through fields at Paul McCartney’s remote estate in Sussex, finally stopped by security guards just yards from the house and handed over to police who locked him up under the Mental Health Act.
