Mike Gastineau:      You'll Never Guess Why TNF Is Here To Stay Read More

This Day In Classic Rock.

It was today in 1965 that Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, and Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones were all jolted by a poorly grounded P.A. system on stage in Denmark.  While lots of us who play music have gotten minor jolts from a microphone while playing an electric guitar, this one was strong enough to render Wyman unconscious for several minutes.

It was today in 1970 that Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary plead guilty to charges of “taking immoral liberties” with a 14 year old girl in Washington D.C. He was sentenced to three months in jail, just days after the folk trio had won a Grammy for best children’s album with “Peter, Paul, and Mommy”.

It was today in 1980 The Police became the first western rock group to play in Mumbai, India in over 10 years.

It was today in 1985 that Stevie Wonder was banned from all radio stations in South Africa after he’d dedicated the Academy Award he’d won the night before to Nelson Mandela.

It was today in 1994 that Seattle’s own Soundgarden entered the U.S. album chart at #1 with Superunknown.

And it was today in 2006 that readers of Total Guitar Magazine voted Jimmy Page’s riffage on Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven as the greatest guitar solo of all time. On the 20th anniversary of the song’s release, S.T.H. had racked up approximately 2,874,000 spins on the U.S Rock radio.  Played back to back on one radio station, that feat would take about 44 years.

Rock and Roll Birthdays

Rufus “The World’s Oldest Teenager” Thomas would be 95 today.  He had hits with “Do the Funky Chicken” and “Walking the Dog”, later covered by Aerosmith. He died at 84.

Diana Ross of the Supremes is 68.

Richard Tandy is 63, keyboard player with E.L.O.

Another pretty good singer, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith is 64 today, still a big Rufus Thomas fan, and pleased to be coming to the Tacoma Dome on August 8th.

and Boston’s original bass player Fran Sheehan is 63.

Be safe, Crowski!
